Character Name: Mato Kuroi / Black Rock Shooter
Character Canon: Black Rock Shooter (2012 TV Anime)

Omegafriends Background: Mato Kuroi was born in Japan, to an aspiring businessman and his wife. She spent her first four years in Japan at which time her father recieved a big promotion -- and a transfer, to Venture City, where he would be working in the City Hall. He snatched up the opportunity and the Kuroi family moved to Venture City, where Mato has lived her whole life. As you can imagine, ended up moving to Venture City with her family when she was very young -- around four or five. She's lived in the city her whole life and as you can imagine, she grew up devouring comic books, movies, cartoons and admiring the heroes that fought to protect the peace around the city and wishing she could be one of them.

Then, at the age of fourteen, Mato got exactly what she wanted.

It was your typical, superhero -- or in this case, magical girl -- awakening. Mato was one of the many soon-to-be heroes her age that had been unknowingly exposed to the radiation of the meteortite that had crashed into the city. For some time, she went around her fairly average life, doing fairly average things -- until her school was, naturally, attacked by an enemy of the Omegafriends who got the bright idea to try and take down a teenage hero who had been scuppering their plans for some time.

Their plan, as you can imagine, backfired in the most spectacular way when Mato -- terrified out of her mind but determined to protect herself and her classmates -- transformed for the very first time and took down the threat to the school. By some miracle, no one seemed to notice Mato Kuroi transforming into the black-coated saviour of the school and instead mistook her for some new hero who happened to be passing by and Mato leapt on the excuse.

Mato coming into the game will be as green behind the ears as you can get -- freshly inducted into the Omegafriends, she's still reeling from being a hero herself and starstruck from meeting all her idols. Only time will tell if she has what it takes to become a real hero.
Personality: On the surface, Mato appears to be the kind of girl you'd find at any middle school anywhere. She's cheerful and outgoing and always full of beans, eager to do or try things that might be fun for her. She's rather awkward around strangers -- she's not shy by any means, but tends to be overly familiar with people she likes, which leads her to be pushy and come off as prying -- she can't really tell when she's making someone uncomfortable and has to be told, bluntly, when her behaviour is a problem. Yomi has to physically stand up and leave the classroom before Mato realizes that she wasn't enjoying their conversation and she insistantly attempts to befriend the other girl even when Yomi insists that they can't be friends.

On top of that, Mato's, well, a bit weird. She's the kind of girl who will vaguely talk to herself, rather disconnectedly about things she sees -- in episode one, she mumbles to herself about a blooming cherry blossom tree and the blossoms it's dropping. She also notes the colours of things rather frequently -- saying 'white' and 'red' aloud in reference to Yomi and later on calling her a 'colourful girl'. She also characterizes feelings and experiences as colours -- this is a behaviour that seems to stem from a book she loves, called The Tiny Bird and the Many, Colours which does the same thing, with "the pink of sneezes" and "the orange of smiles" for example.

It's worth noting that Mato sees herself as 'black' -- which, in the book, is brought about by the bird absorbing too many colours into its wings and dying. What this says about Mato is rather ambiguous -- near the end of the anime, in a fit of grief, Mato frantically scrawls over the last page of the book, adding a happy ending in which the bird takes in the colour of black as well and then goes on to gather more colours in its wings, so it's possible that she views black (which is characterized in the story as being pain or death) as a colour that should be treasured just as much as the others.

This further re-inforces Mato's surprisingly mature view on sadness and pain -- when she finally learns the truth behind the Otherworld and the Otherselves, she's deeply disturbed by its implications -- that people simply forget their pain once their otherselves die -- and insists frequently during the finale that she wants to feel pain and to experience 'the colour of grief', because that's just what life is about. Pretty deep, coming from a middle schooler.

Despite this, it's clear that Mato is still rather childish in some regards -- she's rather naieve, especially when it comes to how she's percieved by others. Her worldview is very black and white (HAH HAH) -- people either like or hate her, with no inbetween and being hated is deeply upsetting for Mato. She is referred to, in canon, as 'a girl who has never hated anyone or been hated in return' and becomes extremely distressed when she believes that Kagari hates her.

On the other hand, this black and white worldview makes it harder for her to understand other people. When Yomi fails to turn up to the festival, Mato confronts her angrily and bursts out that she's not a 'tiny bird' who would want to see new places and runs off in tears -- all without once thinking that Yomi had her reasons for not showing up and especially not taking into account Kagari. She also fails to understand why her friendship with Yuu upsets Yomi later in the series and is shown to be quite careless when it comes to mentioning her -- Yomi moodily observes that Mato and Yuu are close and Mato takes this as a cue to ramble about Yuu some more.

But despite all this, Mato's heart truly is in the right place. Again, this is the kind of girl who cannot bring herself to hate anyone -- even the rampaging Insane Black Rock Shooter, who beats Mato nearly to death during their confrontation. Mato stands up for the things she believes in and does her best to do the right thing whenever she can. Hurting people is the last thing she wants to do.

Powers: Mato's powers diverge from canon somewhat in that rather than Mato and BRS being seperate entities, Mato and BRS are the same person -- BRS is Mato's superpowered alter ego who she transforms into, in a manner akin to a magical girl. She doesn't need any fancy phrase or item, just the will to transform is enough. During her transformation, Mato is bathed in blue flames for a moment and Black Rock Shooter emerges.

Black Rock Shooter is, as seen in canon, a speedy, powerful and athletic fighter. She's strong enough that she can engage in battles with mechas that are easily ten times her size and come out on top (though not without a few injuries) and can dart around the battlefield with ease. Her powers are the following;

Increased Stength and Durability: Black Rock Shooter is much stronger than Mato and much more durable. Her strength is easily five times that of Mato's and she's sturdy enough that she could probably be hit head on by a car and still stagger away mostly unharmed. She's not immune to damage, however -- it's just very hard to injure her. What's important to note, however, is that this doesn't come with any kind of increased tolerance for pain and even if she's not technically injured, Shooter can still be subject to enough pain to get her out of a fight.

Increased Speed and Mobility: Shooter is fast. She's able to outrun a mecha in canon that was going at ridiculous speeds, which suggests to me that she's probably able to run at similarly ridiculous speeds -- for game purposes, I'll top her out at fifty-sixty miles an hour while conciously pushing herself. She also has much better mobility when transformed, enabling her to jump to ridiculous heights, spar in close combat with the otherselves and generally makes her much more graceful.

Weapons: Her main weapon is a black sword that's sheathed to her hip at all times. She also has the ability to summon a cannon that fires rounds of glowing, flaming blue metal.
Sample: Mato -- and BRS -- at the test drive meme.

Notes: I'll be using a separate account for transformed Mato (BRS), [personal profile] starsburn if that's okay!
