FAQ

What is this game about?
Omegafriends is a Saturday Morning Cartoon Superhero AU RP. The characters are residents of the imaginary Venture City, who have been recruited by the superhero organization Omegafriends to protect the city from the forces of nefarious villainy. Or maybe you’re one of the villains! Good clashes against evil! Snappy one-liners are thrown back and forth! Stay in school, kids!

What kinds of characters can I app to his game?
All kinds of characters are welcome at Omegafriends! Live action, game, webcomic, comic, book, and anime characters can all be apped without hesitation, as can original characters (subject to more detailed scrutiny as usual, of course). Being an AU game, “Canon OCs” are generally not allowed or necessary (just describe their abilities and tropes without depending on the canon). All the application rules are laid out on the Application Page.

Can I app a villain?
Yes you can! Villains won't have access to the Omegabase, but thanks to Dr. Devious's hacking, they can post freely on the Omeganet.

Can I app a hero who doesn't work for the Omegafriends?
Yes you can! Independent heroes who cross paths with the Omegafriends a lot are sometimes given Guest Omegawatches, which allow them to post to the Omeganet but not enter the base.

Can I have a character be from the future?
Yes, but please be careful with this! With great power comes great responsibility. If you're playing with time travel, we ask that you make it far enough in the future that the character doesn't know many details of the lives of the present heroes. Even then, be careful to never godmod a character's future actions or infomod a character's future-revealed secrets without the player's permission.

What should the headers look like for my posts?
We don't have a specific format, but please specify clearly at the top of any post (or comment, if it's not obvious from context) whether the post is Text, Audio, Video, or Action. If it's not an action post, then also specify where it's being posted - Omeganet, Rumblr, or wherever else.

Where do action logs go?
Action logs go in the main community, [community profile] omegafriends! All IC content goes to the same place, regardless of content.

What is Omeganet?
Omeganet is the exclusive secret network that the Omegafriends use to communicate. Reading it requires an Omegawatch - provided to all Omegafriends, with limited versions sometimes given to independent heroes - and can be used for text, audio or video posting.

What is Rumblr?
Rumblr is America's most popular social network! Like a bizarre combination of Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter, Rumblr has whatever features a thread requires it to have at any given moment. Everyone who blogs or reblogs, probably does it on Rumblr.

What are the activity rules?
Activity is per-month, the details being available on the rules page. You are only removed from the game if you fail to post activity (or hiatus notices) for two months in a row.

No swearing? Really?
Yes, really! If you don’t see that language in superhero shows aimed at younger audiences, it doesn’t belong here. Characters with severe potty-mouths are either symbol-censored, or their language is given humorous replacements. (“Blister Blather BAAAAARNACLES!!!”)

Is there a big metaplot or planned ending?
Nope! Between player plots, villains of the week, and various sorts of event, there’s plenty going on in Venture City to keep the Omegafriends busy for many seasons of syndication-friendly fun.

What happens when a new character joins the game?
New characters joining the game may be people who have recently discovered their powers, or existing heroes/villains/etc. who have moved to Venture City recently. The only common link is that they’ve either just gotten their link into the Omeganetwork, or have just come into relevance.

For non-powered characters, there may not be anything special about the day they join the game at all - you can just start posting as if they had always been there.

What happens when I drop?
When you drop, we’re all sorry to see you go! But ICly, this just means that the character is no longer an active member of the Venture City superhero scene. Maybe they moved to fight crime in another city, or retired, or just faded quietly into the background. We leave the details up to you.

What happens when my character dies?
Heroes? Dying? Perish the thought!

More seriously, we’d like to be very sparing with character deaths. If a hero is going to die, it should be for a good cause and should accomplish something great. If a villain is defeated, most of the time they either disappear mysteriously only to resurface later, or are arrested. This is a family-friendly game, after all.

If a character does die, they are dropped from the game, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're gone for good. If you want to app a "dead" character, then you should come up with an explanation for how they miraculously survived against all odds, and some brief explanation of what happened to them during their absence. After that, welcome back!

Where does the game take place?
Venture City is a bustling fictional metropolis in California, not far from San Francisco. It is known for its diverse population, healthy economy, hipsters, game developers, and a booming superhero scene. More details about the city and the notable locations therein can be found here.

Can my character leave Venture City?
A hero’s work is never done! Battles on mars, trips to that really nice organic grocery in nearby city, road trips… Venture is the hub for RP activity, but there’s nothing stopping any character from leaving city limits. All we ask is that you get in touch with us before embarking on any extended plot that will take multiple people out of the city.

Where do all these super powers come from?
A few years back, a meteor landed in the middle of Venture Park, obliterating a very expensive statue of Protector! Soon afterwards, an increased occurrence of superpowers was observed in Venture City, leading many to theorize the meteor carried with it a hitherto-unknown alien radiation that reacts to certain individuals, granting them conveniently character-related superpowers!

Of course, there’s just about every other common heroic origin all over the place too. Technological suits, magic, ancient monsters, you name it - it’s very likely to crop up somewhere in Venture City. Whatever fits your character is what goes.

Are there any limits on how powerful a character can be?
Power levels capable of destroying the city or greater need to be significantly limited - insurance doesn’t go that far in fixing the city!

Certain powers require plotting and caution to allow - any sort of time manipulation or mind control power, in particular, should be actively plotted with the relevant players and/or mods, every time. If you’re not sure whether or not a particular power is okay, just ask us and we’ll make a ruling.

Can I have a giant robot?
Yes! But there are conditions. First of all, mecha are definitely not the norm in this setting - there are no armies of mobile suits. Any giant robot is going to be a unique item, and your backstory will need to explain how you got it.

Second, because of the massive risk of collateral damage, mechs are only launched against the biggest threats to Venture City. Against smaller-scale peril, you'll be on your own - if you want to be able to fight in every kind of battle, you might consider swapping it out for some other power set that's reminiscent of the mech.

Can my character be from Hell/Heaven/Valhalla?
Sort of! Such entities are a comic book staple, but we'd prefer that explicit references to the nature of the literal afterlife be left ambiguous. Some of our characters are religious, and we don't want to make the nature of the game an ongoing crisis of faith for them.

Do I have to be a Super?
Nope! Jimmy Olsens, Lois Lanes, and other kinds of civilians of all stripes are allowed into Venture City, and can even get onto the Omeganetwork, either by getting a limited-functionality Omegawatch from a hero, or buying a black-market login and Omegacracker (there’s a lot of both for sale if you bother to look).

Can I app a non-powered character and give them powers?
While events could bring them powers in the future (look how many times that happened to Jimmy Olsen…), a mundane character in their original canon should start off as mundane in Omegafriends. Empowering a non-powered character should generally involve a conversation with the mods as a prerequisite and have a clear plot explanation. This rule may change in the future.

Can I app a powered character and not give them powers?
If you want to, sure!

Do powers have to match a character’s canon abilities?
Nope! Though usually they should at least have some clear relationship to their canon abilities. This can be a great way to tweak a character’s power level downwards - say, turning signature mechanics of a character’s mecha into personal-scale superpowers.

How does the fourth wall work here?
Any canon represented in the game does not exist in-universe. If you reference a series, then someone apps from it, it should be retconned to be a reference to something similar to that canon, but not exactly the real show. People are encouraged to make stuff up here.

There's something of a soft exception to this rule, though: In-universe licensed comics based on the adventures of the Omegafriends exist. These are verified for factual accuracy by the Comics Code Authority, although some more secret actions of the Omegafriends won't show up in them.

Can I draw from multiple versions of a character for my AU?
Certainly! Since this is an AU, you can freely take the powerset from the comics version of a character and the backstory from the movie version, or any other such combination.

My question wasn't on this list!
Sorry about that! Ask it in the comments below and we'll try to answer it as clearly as we can.

Hi, I'm interested in apping Stella here from the Black Rock Shooter canon. However, as she is, Stella is an AU version, who takes elements from the different parts of the Black Rock Shooter franchise (game, anime, OVA). Would I still be okay to app her like this, seeing as how this is an AU game anyway?

Considering apping an AU'd version of Augustus here from the web comic Bittersweet Candy Bowl. Though the AU idea I have is more of a morally gray character who sometimes tries to work both sides for his own goals perhaps. Would a character like that be alright for the setting since he won't be exactly exclusively a hero or villain?

For the adaptation of characters for this AU, how much can we assume about the world for the purposes of character creation, particularly in the department of what powerful extra-planar entities are out there?

If I were to app Raven from the Teen Titans, could I still says her powers come from her father Trigon, who rules the 8th circle of Hell?

Can the gods of Greek and other real-world mythologies be said to exist (or entities that claim to be those gods and are granting the hero those powers in their name)?

etc. etc.

So. The questions. The questiony-questions.

1) Basically, in canon, Ramza is religious (it's a fake religion which is very close to Catholic beliefs). And this religion being ruled by a demon and false and that is important to his canon story - so, may I say he'd of a false religion in case the Espers of FFT might be brought in as a baddie NPC fight thing? Of course, I could change their backstory to aliens if that's less taboo.
Also, are there private religous schools in the City, or would Ramza have to had been schooled outside of it? (Private as in the ones you pay a lot of cashmoney for.)

2) This relates to his powers and abilities. In canon, Ramza can choose his path, since it's a game with a Job System. My headcanons for said job system is that he becomes a Dark Knight though the game. As you can see, that's a lot of abilities he has to learn (and thankfully, scrapping robots will totally count as training). For his powers section, may I just include Wiki links to the jobs, and describe them if they're gonna be vastly different in RP setting?

Also, speaking of mechanics... can Ramza become a chicken if he's cowardly? (This is an actual mechanic of his game and I think silliness is great.)

3) In the backstory I'm crafting, it does assume stuff about his brothers if they were to be apped, even though players of this canon are rare. (Basically, it assumes they were superheroes but retired, they also have powers and tried to help Ramza by pushing him really hard to awaken them, also like canon his eldest brother still secretly poisoned their dad but ssh that's not gonna be shown.) Is this okay, or should I tone it down and make it more vague in case somebody wishes to app them?

[personal profile] moltenman 2014-05-19 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I love the game premise, but I'm curious about apping this particular character, Now in Mark Allan/Moltenman's canon, he was a normal guy who was in gambling debts to certain lowlife. He then became a villain because a certain Goblin villain blackmailed him into using his power to try to kill the resident hero Spiderman which failed on two separate times and was sent to prison.

Now my question is this: could I use the history of Mark getting powers through a villain but not be a villain himself?

Cool premise! I've also got a question for you all, when you've got the time:

What if I wanted to play/adapt mainly from one continuity, but had an interest with adding an element or two from a different version? Such as playing an animated character who also has a comics version, with a few different facets in the backstory.

As a silly example, Captain Corgi comes from the his canine planet and goes directly to Earth as a superhero in an animated cartoon. On the other hand, a comics version of him spent some time in a dog shelter before becoming a hero. What if I wanted to add the shelter bit as an AU element, while making the Omega version of Captain Corgi?

tl;dr is it acceptable to adapt using two sources, or is it preferred to pick one version of the character and stick with that?

Being an AU game, “Canon OCs” are generally not allowed or necessary (just describe their abilities and tropes without depending on the canon).

Sorry, the part in parentheses makes this a bit confusing. So if I did have a canon OC (eg. a player character from an MMORPG), could I just app them as a regular OC or are they totally not allowed? Or am I misunderstanding what a canon OC is in this context?

So let's talk items for a sec.

1. what's the rules/limit on items?
2. Mikey had this magical amulet given to him by the Ninja Tribunal (TMNT season 5) that could focus his chi and give him ninja powers. It was destroyed in a grand battle with Shredder no. 985293857 but I was wondering if there was any way at all for him to regain that amulet here? (I read somewhere here that they can receive powers at some point if they didn't have any but it'd be REALLY cool if there was a way he could get the amulet back anyway)

also some questions on the app while I'm here
"Omegafriends Background: (What changed from your character’s canon history to their AU history? Depending on how different they are from their canon self, anything from a couple sentences to a few paragraphs would be appropriate here.)"

Just to clarify, you want us to do their background and add a back story on how they became an omega friend or something?

Would it be possible for characters from an MMO who have multiple job classes that also affect their personalities to be apped as individual characters/twins or triplets?

Like the characters from Elsword each have three classes changes and there's plot-related things for each or their classes that showed a change in their personality relevant to it.

I see a question has appeared above on whether or not it's possible for a character to cross over out of the dark side! On a perhaps-similar note, is it possible for a character to serve as a mole for one side or the other - specifically an unwitting one, for what I have in mind? For example, an Omegafriend who is subject to mind control or comic-book-science brain-scanning by Titan and Devious.

I've seen mentions about characters arriving in Venture City via interdimensional portals, etc. (Such as Sonic, I believe.)

So, could someone just take the canon version of a character and say they fell through a portal into Venture City, without having to make other changes? (For example, say I wanted to play Samurai Jack, who finally found what he thought was the portal home but it instead drops him off here on the first day of the game.) Or is that heading too much in a jamjar direction?

A question!

I would like to app Eleanor, and I'd like to take her from the good ending of Bioshock 2 (with some changes made to specifics throughout, obviously). The problem is, though, that the ending leaves her with several Little Sisters who are not exactly individual enough to app. Given that they would never be event-relevant and at the MOST might post to the network if a plot incapacitated Eleanor, should I omit them or will I be safe just saying they live with Eleanor and leave then to just sort of be her motivation off to the side?

A few questions on the PG filter. Obviously no swearing or gratuitous gore, but what about subjects that are traditionally not talked about on kids shows but that we, as adults, have no problem with?

For example, obviously in a game like this I wouldn't want to go on a big plot about Vimes becoming an alcoholic again, as that wouldn't fit the tone, but what if I wanted to make a post about some other character saying goofy shit on the omeganet while drunk and play it up for laughs?
